This occurs when the student has met the target score of 90 at some point, but later continued to take tests and lowered their score below 90.
Will this impact the student earning their certificate?
Before the certificate automation went live on May 13, 2022, we were manually calculating completion. Students would need to ensure they maintained the necessary scores at all times to get their certificate, because we would only see the score snapshots periodically.
The new automation can see that the student is in Stage 2, meaning that at one point they did successfully reach a score of 90 for Stage 1. When they hit a score of 90 for Stage 2, the certificate is earned and a link shows on the My Achievements page within minutes, even if they later choose to continue studying and the score for either stage goes down.
Important Exception
The exception is for English: if the student's Stage 2 score is under 90 when they Essay Grade is added by the instructor, they will need to get their Stage 2 score up to 90 again to earn the English certificate.
